Church believed to have been organized as early as 1832. First property deeded to the church was four acres from Joseph John "Chatham Jack" Alston, 19 July 1832, Deed AE-267.

On 25 October 1995, Will M. and Audrey O. Heiser recorded 678 grave markers, and 105 illegible or unmarked stones. In the southwest corner of the cemetery, in the woods, there is a large area covered with periwinkle. 10 field stones were counted, and there are probably more field stones buried under the leaves. This area was alleged to have been a cemetery for enslaved people. Julie King-McDaniel photographed all visible markers in the fall of 2013 and updated the survey in August 2023.
