      James O'Kelly, a pioneer of Methodism, founder of the Christian Church, came to Chatham County in 1794 and gathered a congregation, which eventually took the name of O'Kelly Chapel. In 1797, he began a congregation in Orange County known as Damascus Christian Church. He also began Martha's Chapel (F62.1) in Chatham County in 1803. James O'Kelly served these three congregations as a circuit-riding preacher for a number of years.

      Mary Wilson Lawrence was reinterred from Thomas R. Lawrence Cemetery (M24.1). See Corps of Engineers Final Report for Relocation of Cemeteries, Group II, 7 Nov 1973. Franklin Castlebury, Dicy C. Parrish, Denecy C. Castlebury, Alfred M. Parrish, and four unknown graves were reinterred from Parrish-Castlebury Cemetery (F05.1). See Corps of Engineers Final Report for Relocation of Cemeteries, Group I, 20 April 1971. O'Kelly Chapel is called, by the Corps of Engineers, Reinterment Site No. 1, Group I Report.

      In 1989, Robert Hughes recorded 86 grave markers and 17 unmarked graves. On 23 February 1995, Will and Audrey Heiser checked the graves reinterred and found one additional burial in 1991. Jim and Bev Wiggins photographed all of the markers in the cemetery in Nov 2010.
