Death certificate has died 18 Sep 1921 at age of 16 years and 8 days. Death Certificate. Another view of marker. Eugene was lynched in Pittsboro in the early hours of Sunday, 18 Sep 1921. According to oral history, he went to Pittsboro to visit a girlfriend, who was the maid in a Pittsboro household. He slipped into the room usually occupied by the maid, who was not there, and frightened the daughter of the household. He was tracked down with bloodhounds and taken to the Pittsboro jail. According to newspaper reports at the time a mob of about 50 men went to the jailer's house and demanded the key. The jailer refused to give it to them but slipped it out a window to hide it. The key was found by the mob and they took Eugene five miles east of town, hung him, and riddled his body with bullets. -As reported in the Rockingham Post-Dispatch, Richmond County NC on Thursday, 22 Sep 1921.

Back of marker:Mountain Williams thought to be a Cherokee Indian, was bought in Fayetteville North Carolina by John Williams. She was a talented cook known especially for baking cakes. She gave birth to the following children. Josephine. Caroline. LaFayetta. Clementina. Hawkins. Henrietta (Barbee). Adolphus. Wiley Haywood. Roxanna Frances (Mahyo). Mary (Jenkins) all fathered by her slave master. Josephine was a founder of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church and Caroline gave the land on which the church is built. The Williams family cemetery was given by Mountain to her descendants. She was among few slaves who left a documented will. THERE IS A MOUTAIN OF LOVE IN THE WILLIAMS FAMILY. Family emblem design by Linwood L. Mitchiner Great, Great Grandson of Mountain Williams. This monument was dedicated May 9, 1999.
