      • Wife of Jim Churchwell. Sylvia Churchwell, 74, passed away in her home after a brief fight with pancreatic cancer. Born in Guilford County and raised in the Silk Hope community of Chatham County, Churchwell and her family moved to Sanford in 1979. Churchwell was a retired educator working in Chatham, Guilford and Lee county school systems with her career spanning more than 38 years. She was an alumnus of East Carolina University where she completed her undergraduate degree and teaching certification and UNC-Greensboro where she earned her Masters degree in education and counseling. Throughout her lifetime, Churchwell believed in giving back to her community. She was a long-time member of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension and Community Association serving in many roles at both the local and state levels. Churchwell served on the Highway to Healing board and drove cancer patients for treatments for more than 20 years. She was a board member of the Salvation Army of Lee County and was a strong supporter of their Jobs for Life program. Staying close to her passion for education and community involvement, Churchwell was a member of the Lee County Retired School Personnel, the United Way's Community Investment Team, Sanford Women's Club, and spokesperson for Project Lazarus. Dedicated to her church, Lemon Springs United Methodist, Churchwell served as a former treasurer and on several committees. She was named Lay Person of the Year in 2000 for the Sanford District of the North Carolina Conference United Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband of 40 years, Jim Churchwell; daughters: Beth and husband, Dan Manos; Jamie and husband, Tim Childress; Renee and husband, David Green; grandchildren: Jessica, Alex, Katie, Jordan, Ryan, Marissa, Sydney, Hunter, and Lexus; sisters: Betty and husband, Harold Ray Edwards; and Lois and husband, Randall Hicks. Arrangements were handled by the Miller Boles Funeral Home of Sanford, NC. Funeral services were held in the Jonesboro UMC sanctuary and the interment service at Lemon Springs United Methodist Church.

      • Wife of Jefferson Woodrow Davis. Mrs. Jean Eggers Davis, age 91, of Sanford, NC, died surrounded by family. She was born in Watauga County, NC to the late Thomas Orville Eggers and Della Elizabeth Penley Eggers. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Rev. Jefferson Woodrow Davis; one brother; two sisters and a grandson Michael R. Watson Jr. Mrs. Davis, along with her late husband, served the Methodist Churches for 50 plus years. She and her husband served in the ministry hand-in-hand. Her priorities were church, family and loved gardening and her flowers. She is survived by daughter Libby Davis Farthing and husband Bill of Kokomo, IN, daughter Evelyn Davis Watson and husband Mike of Sanford, son Billy Davis and wife Rita of Sanford and daughter Martha Davis Meeks and husband Jarrell of Sanford; grandchildren Jeannie and Todd Gambill, Julie and Greg Griffin, Catherine Farthing, Rhonda and Barry Wright, Laura Watson, Jeffrey and Tonya Davis, Renee and Ronnie Fields, David and Heather McBurnett, William and Ashley McBurnett, James and Danielle McBurnett, Sara and Jeff Brewer and Patrick and Randie Meeks; 26 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren. Arrangements were handled by Bridges Cameron Funeral Home of Sanford, NC. Services were held at Lemon Springs UMC with burial in the church cemetery.

      • Husband of Geraldine Batchelor Laws. Clinnie Malcolm Laws, age 98, of Lemon Springs, NC, passed away at his home. Mr. Laws was born in Orange County, NC to the late Kinnie Laws and Hattie Crabtree Laws. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Batchelor; two brothers Cobby Laws, Wayne Laws and two sisters, Pauline Stevens and Pat O'Quinn; one granddaughter, Susan Deal and a son-in-law, Connie Deal. He was once the owner/operator of a hardware and grocery store but retired from Continental Insurance Company as an insurance agent. He was also a farmer-merchant in Lemon Springs for many years. Mr. Laws was a long-time active member of Lemon Springs United Methodist Church and was a graduate of Greenwood High School. Mr. Laws served our country, for six years, in the United States Navy during World War II and the last surviving Pearl Harbor survivor in our area. He is survived by three sons, Clinnie Malcolm Laws, Jr., "Mike" and wife Pattie of Lemon Springs, Dennie Rodney Laws of Swann Station and Kennie Scott Laws and wife, India of Lemon Springs; three daughters, Judy L. Deal of Lemon Springs, Jean L. Sellers and husband, Ronnie of Laurinburg and Patsy L. Richardson and husband, Charles of Lemon Springs; one sister, Lillie Layton of Swann Station; nine grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. Arrangements were handled by Bridges Cameron Funeral Home. Services were held at Lemon Springs United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Portrait.
