065    SAINT MARY'S EPISCOPAL CHAPEL CEMETERY (CA. 1759) [DISUSED]

Location - About 6 miles ENE of Hillsborough on the north side of St. Mary's Road (SR #1002) at its NE intersection with Pleasant Green Road (SR #1567).

      Coordinates: 36d 06m 59.0s N; 78d 59m 58.0s W Click here for Online Maps

Survey - This cemetery was surveyed on March 5, 1962 and rechecked on December 4, 1973 and February 10, 1975. Photographs of cemetery and 14 stones found were made by Milton Forsyth in 2005.

Graves, Marked - There were 41 graves marked.

Graves, Unmarked - There were 5 graves unmarked.

Comment - the first chapel was built in 1759; the present church in 1859. Services were discontinued at the church in the 1930s. The cemetery was apparently not in use by the 1960s. The facility had fallen into disrepair when a renovation project was begun in 1974, and continues today (1997). In 1978 the church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The cemetery today is covered with fallen tree materials, and possibly fewer headstones remain than when the survey was conducted. Two Eagle Scouts built a makeshift stone walkway from the church to the cemetery in 1993. There are plans to restore and open the cemetery to future burials. [see Raleigh News & Observer, 2 Dec 1996, P. 1b].
