Location - At the corner of Village Drive and Jay Street in Chapel Hill. Owned and maintained by the Town of Chapel Hill.

      Coordinates: 35d 55m 13.0s N; 79d 04m 05.0s W Click here for Online Maps

Survey - This cemetery was in the past referred to as the Lewis Hackney Memorial Cemetery or the Carrboro Black Cemetery. It was surveyed in March, 1975. In this survey there were 44 marked graves and 7 unmarked graves (probably more). Some stones from the 1970s survey may no longer be in place. A report on the cemetery was prepared in 2011 by Steve Rankin; this report provides more extensive information on the history and burials (Rankin, Steve J., "A Segregated Part of Heaven: The History of the West Chapel Hill Cemetery" [The Preservation Society of Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, North Carolina: May 2011]). The burials have been updated to include information from this report. Click on the following link to see Steve's report: CLICK HERE.
