Location - behind 961 Pilot Church Rd, Shoals, Surry County, NC.

Directions: From the traffic circle at US 52 and NC Hwy 268 just west of Pilot Mtn, go west on NC Hwy 268 for 0.2 mile and turn Left on Shoals Rd. Then go 2.7 miles and turn Right on Pilot Church Rd. Then go 1.7 miles to 961 Pilot Church Rd. The cemetery is located above the banks of Pilot Creek and is about 0.5 - 0.75 mile through the fields, woods, and steep banks behind the home of the homeowner. Special permission was given to the Surry County Genealogical Association to visit and record the cemetery.

The cemetery is known as the Powell Cemetery. It was perhaps the first cemetery of ancestors and/or descendants of Benjamin H. Powell Sr and his wife Jimmie Ann Jordan, who were married 5 Jan 1850 in Cumberland County, NC. There was evidence of at least 5-6 graves, although only one grave was legible. The rest were field stones and some had sunken graves with significant overgrowth.
