325    MACON, NATHANIEL CEMETERY (Nathaniel Macon Dr.)

Location - on Nathaniel Macon Dr (SR-1348) about 0.5 mile from Eaton Ferry Rd (SR-1344).


Directions: From Warrenton courthouse on Hwy 158 E Bus, travel 9.9 miles to Vaughan and turn left onto SR 1345 (Eaton Ferry Rd). Travel 0.1 mile and bear left onto SR 1344 (Eaton Ferry Rd). Travel 0.75 mile and continue right on SR 1344. Travel 3.1 miles and turn left onto SR 1348 (Nathaniel Macon Dr). Travel 0.5 mile. The grave is on the right under a large pile of rocks and has a tall tombstone. Race-White.

Note: Tradition tells that Nat Macon once praised rocks as being as beautiful and worthy as flowers. After his death, he said, he'd as soon that people brought rocks to his grave as flowers. "Don't bring a flower," he said. "Let it live. Bring a rock." Legend has it this quote was scratched on the first headstone that marked his grave. Whether it was true or not, word got around, and over the years the rocks piled up on Macon's grave and overflowed onto the graves of the wife and son, who are buried on either side of Mr. Macon.
