501    TURNER, JAMES (Governor) GRAVE

      Location - off Gum Pond Rd (SR-1631) about 0.5 mile from Hwy 58.


      Directions: From Warrenton courthouse on Hwy 158 E Bus, travel 0.5 mile and turn right onto Hwy 58. Travel 4.2 miles to Liberia and continue right onto Hwy 58. Travel 3 miles and turn left onto SR 1631 (Gum Pond Rd). Travel 0.5 mile and turn right onto a timber path after the 90 degree curve. Walk 0.62 mile and take a right at the dead end. Walk 0.42 mile to the end of the pine forest. At a larger hardwood tree on the left, climb the bank and follow the fence line east for 0.28 mile. A large periwinkle patch is on the left against the broken fence among the trees. No graves or markers are observable. Race-White.

      Note: Other sources state that he is buried at his home, "Bloomsbury," which was once located on SR 1236 (Bloomsbury Rd) off US 1 Hwy. The house is no longer standing.


  1. Turner, James (Gov.)   (b. 20 Dec 1776 - d. 15 Jan 1824)
      • Served as Governor from 1802 - 1805 and United States Senator from 1805 - 1816. Governor Turner died at his home, "Bloomsbury," and is buried in Warren County, N.C.
