082    MOUNT SINAI CEMETERY

Location - about one mile west or southwest of Huntsville and near the Davie county line.

The data in survey is a compilation of two surveys - one from Carl C. Hoots and his book Cemeteries of Yadkin County, NC, reprinted by The Reprint Company, Publishers, Spartanburg, SC, 1985. The second is from a two-page document McCubbins Collection Source Material for Rowan County Genealogies and Local History that is from the Rowan County Library which was sent to me by a descendant. There were some differences in the burial information between the Hoots and McCubbins documents as well as some additions provided by a descendant. With this in mind, remember this is not an attempt to validate either the Hoots or McCubbins surveys, or the knowledge provided by the descendants, but is provided as information to researchers.

Some photographs provided by Chapman descendants.

From the website for the Rowan County Public Library:

"Mamie McCubbins was born in Salisbury, NC on April 26, 1874. Her passion for collecting family histories of Rowan County led her to become one of the foremost genealogists in the Southeast. The Mamie McCubbins Collection consists of nearly fifty years worth of research notes for her anticipated, comprehensive book on early Rowan County families."

The McCubbins file indicates the cemetery is one mile west of Huntsville and near the old homes of Boone Harding (then occupied by the widow of Dr. John Jarrett Clingman) and the log hut of Jacob Brewbaker the Prussian volunteer in Revolution (which was occupied when the survey was done by W. J. Brewbaker and his mother). A descendant said the log cabin owned by Jacob Brewbaker was purchased about the time of his marriage by their gr-gr-grandfather John H. Chapman. It was sold after John and his wife moved out west. Allen Chapman, John's brother, purchased the home again and he remained there until he died along with his mother and sister, Mary Jane Chapman who later gave the home to one of the Brewbakers in exchange for her care. The descendant also said it was now a gift shop (possibly the Potter's Cabin which is a small restaurant).

Other descriptive information (the majority of which was not found in the Hoots or McCubbins data) has been added such as given names, or month and day of birth or death (versus just year), marriage dates, and relationships, some of which came from communicating with descendants, census, marriage, and death records where they could be found. If descendants know of any factual error, please contact Bob Carter (carter467885@gmail.com) and we'll update it.

This cemetery appears to have also been referred to as the old Methodist & Episcopal cemetery and has been described as southwest of Huntsville in Yadkin County near the Davie County line. This old cemetery is abandoned and believed to be next to the original church which no longer exists. The new church and cemetery was erected in April 1888 and a survey of that cemetery can be seen at OLD HUNTSVILLE METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH.
